San Giusto in Salcio

The Pieve di San Giusto in Salcio has been mentioned numerous times since the 11 C in the papers of the Abbey of Coltibuono. The property must have been of a certain importance since it was often given as prebend to influential members of well- known Florentine families.

The church is a basilica with three naves, the same number of apses and an open truss-beamed roof. The bell tower is situated behind the church and consists of a mighty tower on a square base, the upper part of which was reconstructed. In place of the present tower there used to be a small bell gable inserted directly into the wall.

Chiantigiana

The Via Chiantigiana is one of the most enjoyable routes in Italy. It runs directly south from Florence to Sienna through the middle of the Chianti Classico wine zone of Tuscany, Italy, one of the most instantly recognisable landscapes in the world. Starting south of Florence the Chiantigiana runs upward and follows the ridges between the Val d'Elsa and the Valdarno passing through villages and small towns.

The towns of  Radda in Chianti and Gaiole in Chianti are just a short distance along side roads from the via Chiantigiana and can be visited by following the network of secondary roads that link them together.

Castello di Meleto

The eastern part of the Chiantigiana is also called Strada dei Castelli del Chianti. The Castello di Meleto f.e. not far away from Gaiole (4 km) is characterized by its round corner towers dating back to the 11th century. It was developed during the 13th century as a well-fortified castle to one of the strongest fortress works of the Chianti league.
Today the Castello it is a vineyard place.
